Welcome to the inaugural episode of the Your Birth Coven podcast. I'm Elissa Carney, your host, a birth doula, and a home birth midwife in training. Today, I'm opening up about my own journey - the highs, the lows, and the unexpected twists that led me to become a birthworker.
A Birth Journey Unveiled
In this episode, I share the story of my first childbirth experience, a pivotal moment that propelled me into the world of birthwork. It was a tale of two births - one in a hospital setting, the other at home - each leaving an indelible mark on my path.
As I recount the intense moments of labor, the unexpected decisions, and the profound emotions, you'll witness the raw reality of childbirth, stripped of any romanticism often associated with it.
The Unforeseen Challenge: A Brush with Birth Trauma
One significant challenge emerged after my first birth experience, an unexpected encounter with the complexities of the healthcare system. I open up about the aftermath of using marijuana during my pregnancy and the subsequent involvement of Child Protective Services (CPS).
The emotional rollercoaster that followed, the fear, guilt, and shame, was a challenging period for me. I delve into the details of this experience, exploring the misinformation, the emotional toll, and the support I initially received.
A Journey to Healing and Empowerment
Revisiting this chapter in my life wasn't easy, but it's a story I've held close for five years. The aftermath of my experience led to postpartum anxiety, a period of intense self-reflection, and ultimately, a dedication to supporting other women through their birthing journeys.
Why I Became a Doula
The vulnerability and isolation I felt during those critical moments fueled my passion for becoming a doula. No woman should face childbirth alone, and no woman should endure the isolation that I experienced. The aim of sharing my story is to shed light on the importance of support, understanding, and compassion during the delicate phases of pregnancy and childbirth.
